The album title draws from Wang Wei's verse "lonely smoke rises straight from the vast desert" — evoking the grandeur of the Tang dynasty. Reinterprets ancient scores alongside new compositions: the otherworldly imagination of Phantom Chang'an and The Jade Fox, the parting sorrows of Willow Pass and Frontier Cold, the martial spirit of Breaking Formation, and the dream-ruined palace of Rainbow-Robe Dream.

The subtitle "Return of Water and Clouds" derives from Song-dynasty qin master Guo Mian's Mists over Xiao & Xiang, carrying the ethereal spirit of Chinese art and the unbroken transmission of melody between qin and player. Reinterprets ancient scores alongside new compositions — the literati introspection of Apricot-Blossom Shadow and Drifting on the Canglang, and the folk voices of Drunken Fisherman, Evening Song and Man Jiang Hong — capturing the humanism and tonal grace of the Song.
Shenqi Mipu · 600 Years
2025 marks the 600th anniversary of the publication of Shenqi Mipu — the impetus for both this album and its concert tour. Compiled in 1425 by Zhu Quan, Prince of Ning of the Ming dynasty, it is China's earliest and most complete extant collection of qin scores, preserving 64 pieces. This album selects thirteen — performed as guqin solos, reinterpretations of ancient pieces, and transcriptions onto other instruments — turning six centuries of resonance into a sound for today.
